WE ARE HONORED TO ANNOUNCE OUR 2012 PARADE GRAND MARSHAL - GEORGE GARWOOD JR.

George Garwood Jr. served as the mayor of South Ogden City from 2002-2010. Garwood was the first African-American mayor in the state of Utah. While serving as mayor, Garwood worked hard to increase sales tax revenue by enticing Costco to come to the City and encouraging citizens to Shop South Ogden.
The sixth of nine children Garwood grew up in St. Louis, Missouri. His family moved to Tooele, Utah when he was 15 years-old. Garwood has always loved history and dreamed of one day becoming a history teacher. He majored in History while attending Utah State University. Garwood has lived in South Ogden City for 34 years.
For the last 30 years, Garwood has worked for the Utah Driver License Division and the Department of Public Safety. He has served as a board member of Ogden Regional Medical Center, and Utah Commission of Volunteers. Garwood currently is serving a second term as the board chairman of the Ogden-Weber Community Action Partnership, and is also a hearing officer for the Weber-Morgan Health Department.
Garwood performed with the Salt Lake Symphonic Choir for 18 years. During his time with the choir, he toured around the world including Russia and Armenia. Garwood is currently in his third year performing with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
Garwood loves the good reputation of South Ogden City as a family oriented, friendly community. During these hard economic times, Garwood would like to encourage the citizens of South Ogden City to “don’t sweat the little things. Depression and fear causes [us] to not see the end of the road. Enjoy the moment; enjoy the journey, and focus on the bigger things that are more important; family, neighbors, and community.”
